Contest Structure

Students who want to participate in NHD should first talk to their teacher at their school. Your teacher will help you get started. Some of the early things you will have to decide are your topic, how it relates to the annual theme, whether to work alone or in a group and what project category will best fit the topic.

After doing research and completing your project, you may have a school contest or enter a district contest directly, competing against students of the same division and with entries in the same category. The top finishers in each category advance to the state contest. At the state contest, the first and second places in each category are eligible to go to the national contest that is held each year in June at the University of Maryland near Washington, DC.
